I've been fooling around a bit since my schooling ended this morning and am heading into this without really any knowledge. However I'm going to give it a shot (after shot, after shot...) to get it down so that we can have at least decent graphics when the real launch happens a long ways down the line.

I figure regardless of what theme we decide on we will have a human class at the least, and I could make a base male and a base female to build off of into other units. As I keep trying these things out, it would be really helpful to know at least the general direction of units you'd like to see, at least visually (stats wouldn't matter for the graphics). Like if you want a general concept (ie. wolf, or look at the way this guy looks, or even I like the shape of this person's body) post a handful of pictures that are at least somewhat similar to what you are thinking.

That's not a finished unit that's like a skull that hasn't been shaped into something unique, no skin and no details added. I'm not sure if you got that, like they won't all be crazy geometric and shades of grey.

What would be helpful to me, is if you say you want like little art descriptions. Maybe you want a character to be overweight, or you want a scar, short sleeve shirt, certain weapons for inspiration. Ideas for animating how they move or attack. Maybe Instead of a Beast Rider it's something like Jon Snow and his Direwolf walking as inspiration. Do you want certain characters to look Asian, Indian, White, Black, whatever? Like facial features, skin tones, body builds all that is relevant. What does their hair look like, are they wearing a hat or helmet of some sort?

Anything like that would be helpful.

Also people liked the idea of an entire world built. Well describe it so I can build it. Say if it's has Desert, Forrest, Snow, Plains whatever Island surrounded by water. Try to put some detail into it like I want Oak trees instead of Pine or anything like that so I can get an idea of what people want. Are different areas flat, or do they have rolling hills or high mountains. All of that is relevant to me understanding what you guys want. Do you want the lobby area to look like a map, where you send an avatar to a certain area of the map to "change floors"? Do you want the board to have different variants on different areas (ie. forrest has trees imbedded blocking out tiles? or Mountain encroaches in shrinking the sides of the map? An island that sea splits the back centers of the map?

I need your guys input on this kind of stuff so we can head in the right direction and make something that looks like the world our community wants a TAO-like game to be set it.

What are the unit classes or races? TAO was Humans, Beasts, and Golems. Do you want just Humans and Animals? Do you want it to be space themed like Star Wars? What do you want?

i'm not gonna lie, i've been around for the forums since 2005 i don't think that's changing anytime soon.

but I wanted to say i'm pretty impressed that you were able to make a head..unless it was easy then i'm not that impressed. :) it's cool that you are taking the time to learn how to do all this

Head and chest are a bit big (or lower legs, forearms too small), still no hands, but whatever.

I customized the base unit into a weird looking creature and put in a frame and animated, but I screwed up a bone in the foot where his toe wouldn't move. I figured out animation, just before I post about it I want to do it right (no stuck toes >:c ), the other foot and the rest of the body worked though so that's good I probably just misclicked early on.

Whoa. That was quick. Torso is kinda long though. Head/upper body looks a little bit too big compared to the low back and legs, too. Looks good otherwise.

It looks bird like, I was saying you should just keep it as a big ass bird and name it accordingly (Ancient Raptor?).

Hulky is modeling way easier than I imagine it is or are you just picking this up really quickly? Either way nice work man. Birdtor is really coming together nicely.

Are you interested in playing around in it and/or making some? It's more time consuming than hard I feel like (but when you start you will hate everything and want to quit, my advice is to save repeatedly sometimes at different "steps" so you can go back easier). I'd guess that making the basic unit takes about an hour to two hours, then step two would be adding a bone structure which is about an hour, then animate which takes about 30 minutes or so.

These are rough guesses, and many of mine take a bit longer than that to pause and watch a tutorial for the step, try it, if screw up undo, repeat and whatnot. I think each step could be shaved down to under an hour each with proficiency (creating from scratch isn't something you have to do repeatedly either as you can use one basic render as a base point for another and so on, but I start from scratch each time to get it down). One thing that slows me down as well is the tutorial videos use PC and all hotkeys, and I use a Mac and not all the hotkeys are the same and I try and find manual ways to accomplish the same task. I also have not begun making them pretty with skins and whatnot or really delving into the sculpting tools.

Anyways if you want here is the program: https://www.blender.org/
It's free (everything is free, a free version of photoshop [essentially] is www.pixlr.com).

Here is the first video tutorial I watched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aU6Wty9fvg

Through his channel I also got the tutorials on bone structure and animating.

Beyond that I've come across some sites with more advanced stuff that I've watched just to get a grasp on what can happen down the line.

Are the lengths looks alright here? like arm/legs/torso/head

hands/feet are less of a concern given how small a unit is. Like they basically only need to exist, but if they look off too say so.

the depth of the body and like developing muscles basically is later. I want to get the basic shape right first (and make those damned hands which takes much longer than you'd think, joints seem to be the most difficult part, and a hand is basically a bunch of joints in a small area).

Basically what I'm looking to do here is make a base Human.
Then I can load this base unit and easily scale things like shoulders, hips and what not to make it male or female. Then add muscles and whatnot that makes the unit itself look more unique. But if I build a basic Human and then add a bone structure and make all the weights and rotations and whatnot right on a basic Human it would save a ton of steps for each additional unit down the line.

Does the bone structure work well? Looks leg heavy. Looks like good base for knight unit or dwarves.

Meant to show you these concepts too

Honestly, the scale there is pretty good. Maybe make the humerus slightly longer and shorten up the forearm? It's pretty close, though. You probably don't even need to do that if it's too much trouble.

Definitely make the hands a bit bigger, maybe 20-30%?

But, yeah, like Meletus said, this dude definitely lifts. Monstrous calves. :P

I would lengthen the shin length a hair. Aside from that, not a bad launching point.

it has a skeleton now, but I haven't made the bones work correctly to one another yet and their ranges of motion and whatnot. But it's still the beginnings of a base.

details to make the human unique is much later. I just hate the bones so having that basic structure all made up to be a starting point for each additional is useful. They all end up around the same size as well this way which is good.
