Down 31-0 you have to go for 2 after every TD. What possible reason could you have for taking the PAT there? Turns it from a possible 3 score deficit to a definite 4 score deficit. Just stupid.

Yep. Stupid. Only possible reason is Mcarthy wants his guys to stay cool, act like they're not desperate since there's almost an entire half left. Just business as usual.
But it's not, and pretending it is doesn't do shit. Like you said, Packers are down 31-0. It's win or go home, there's no next week. You go for 2 every time.
Again, it's football not rocket science. Lots of times these "brilliant" coaches act like simple-minded hicks who spend most of their lives thinking about a game where people put on helmets and fight for a leather ball.

Not really. If they miss on the first try and only score 6, then it's still a 25 point game and a 4 possession game. By going for one, it's a 3 possession game.

Moot point though, Atlanta spanked that ass. GB had some tough breaks like the Ripowski fumble at the goal line and Crosby missing early, but the GB defense was in incredibly porous. Going to be a good SuperBowl.

EDIT: Fuck Crosby btw. Of all times to miss a FG. Bastard could've missed one last week.

2 receivers with 9 catches 180 yards and 2 touchdowns today. One was basically unstoppable and every time his qb threw deep you had a feeling it would be him catching it for a big gain. He made defenders look silly all day.

The other was Julio Jones

Falcons have scored a TD on their opening drive for 8 straight games

i think if they do it again, they'll win. it would keep the confidence level extremely high and the third down magic alive and real. if they don't score a TD on their opening drive in the superbowl, i think the Pats will take it. both of the defenses are overmatched but the Pats have more pieces back there so the Falcons need to strike early and often i believe

bludhoundz
01-23-2017, 12:39 PM
They aren't the underdogs. They have more experience and a more well rounded team. They have a pretty good defense, and a very good offense. Falcons have a ridiculous offense and a defense thats certainly below average. The mismatch is Pats O vs Falcons D -- Falcons insane offense has to make up for that mismatch by continuing to play out of their minds and rolling over a very competent Pats D if they want to win.

You're looking at it from a very conventional viewpoint. I don't care about the reputations of the teams. I care about how they're currently playing. They were both on fire yesterday. Falcons looked godly.

bludhoundz
01-23-2017, 01:32 PM
If you care about how they're currently playing, then my analysis still makes sense because I was looking at how they are currently playing. I did toss in experience in there and sometimes it's a factor sometimes it isn't. I think it'll be a factor somewhat, just going through the whole Superbowl media week and the extra week off. But that was a very small part of my post anyway. Both teams have looked good, and both teams have won handily in their only 2 playoff games. That said, the Patriots defense is more capable than the Falcons, and they've been playing like it. The Falcons D is reliant moreso on their crazy offense to give them a lead to protect. The Pats D I think could provide body blows in a lower scoring slugfest (or the more likely scenario, come up with stops if they fall behind in the score). Do I think the SB will be low scoring? No, but I think their defense has more capability to make plays. I do think Atlanta possesses a better offense, but the gap isn't all that huge. In a heavyweight offensive showdown, I'll give odds to the team with a better defense

NC State beating Dook and now this? What has the world come to??

People think the Patroits defense is pretty solid but they've played like negative four teams this year that have any kind of functioning offense. The teams they've faced in the playoffs haven't been offensive juggernauts either, and before you choo-choo on the Steeler's train keep in mind they literally could not score a touchdown for basically two games.

The patroits and falcons defense wash. The biggest thing is Tom Brady vs. Matt Ryan/Julio DAH GOD Jones.

Interesting observations:
http://www.nj.com/sports/index.ssf/2017/02/super_bowl_2017_latest_betting_line_odds_on_new_en .html

Patriots' Historic Spread Season

The New England Patriots went 13-3 against the spread during the regular season. The last team to cover 13 games in the regular season and win the Super Bowl was New England, doing so during its 2003 championship campaign. That year they went just 1-2 against the spread during the playoffs.

The last time a team covered 16 games in a season, including the playoffs, was the 1989 San Francisco 49ers. That 49ers team went 13-3 ATS during the regular season and 3-0 ATS in the playoffs. The Patriots have a chance to match that historic record with a cover on Super Bowl Sunday as they are 2-0 ATS in the postseason this year.

Falcons' Historic Over-Under Season

The Atlanta Falcons played to a 13-3 over-under mark during the regular season. They are 2-0 over-under in the NFL Playoffs.

Atlanta is the first team to cash the over in 15 games since the 1997 Denver Broncos, which won the Super Bowl that year. The Broncos needed 20 games that season in order to reach 15 overs while the Falcons have a chance to become the first team in NFL history to cash 16 overs.

Last season, the Falcons were the polar opposite, cashing 13 unders and just 2 overs (1 push).

This is what I was worried about. The Falcons are an offensive juggernaut.

So, time to put our money where our mouths are, figuratively speaking: Who y'all taking this Sunday?

I'm not confident in it, but I'm taking the Patriots. I think their defense will rise to the occasion, and Butler may be just enough to win us another one. The Shanahan offense scores something like 28 points on average against the Patriots and thats including many years with much less powerful offenses and much better Patriot defenses. Matt Ryan has fucking lit up much better NFC teams in the playoffs than the Patriots have faced with 3 or 4 TD a game each time. It's not close at all. The Falcons have a sack leader, 3 of the best young corners, the best WR, a comparable QB. It's not going to be close this is a Falcon win. I made my voice hoarse from screaming at all the fucking winning the Patriots did tonight. Does anyone here think they'll ever see a better game?

I gave them a <1% chance to win when it was 28-3. I almost left my friend's house to go home to go to bed. When they scored the first touchdown, I bumped the chances up to 3-5%. Truly thought the game was over before they started marching down the field multiple times.

Apparently in situations where team is leading by more than 19 points in 3rd, teams in the lead ended up with the win 93 out of 93 times. That stat flashed on the screen around the time I called the <1% chance.

I woke up at 3:00 am in a cold sweat. I reached over and checked my phone. I saw they score and then put my phone back in the nightstand. I then just say there...in the dark...for like an hour and half. Not moving...just...sitting.

Next thing I knew my alarm went off. I have felt numb the rest of today. Almost like a out of body experience.

I decided last night in the darkness that I'm done with the NFL for a bit. This past season has been truly awful both in real life and . I mean I knew this was going to be the end result of the season. But ending it...like that? Makes me feel broken.

So you win superfans. You win everything. I can't fight you anymore. Enjoy your fantasy (even through it brings rage). Have fun with it. It is going to be hard to ignore it next year but I feel as if there is no choice. i just feel...broken watching it now. I...just...can't do it anymore. I can't feel this let down anymore. Maybe after taking a season off i'll feel better but for now it is one of the last few things that made me happy removed from my life.

How Atlanta players shook hands afterwards i'll never know. I honestly don't know how they did it.

I mean, I don't know what to say. We drafted two franchise QBs in one draft and ran one into the ground and are probably going to let the other walk. This franchise destroys everything it touches.

Hugh
03-12-2017, 12:28 PM
Do you agree with the decision to put the franchise tag on Cousins? Do you think it's what we wants?
Do you believe the report that we won't sign a long term deal with Washington if Bruce Allen is president? If so, this is really the only option for everyone, Cousins and the Redskins, except for a trade. I doubt you want a trade.
I'm being Captain Obvious, I know, but what would you like to see happen as a Redskins fan? Firing Bruce Allen seems like the easiest answer, but that's not usually how it works.

Serge
03-12-2017, 04:21 PM
Cousins should have been signed to a long term deal before last season. Sure the fans and media didn't know he was a franchise QB back then but its the front office's job to know.

Since that obviously didn't happen, he should have been offered a long term deal this offseason. The franchise tag makes sense because they were so far apart. But I don't understand why they were so far apart.

As an aside, this is really all Tom Brady's fault. If that class traitor hadn't taken a huge discount to help his team's cap space we wouldn't have the stupid stories about how if Cousins got $X/yr he'd be the highest paid QB in the league.

I don't believe stories about Cousins holding out. He'll sign the tag in time to not miss any offseason stuff. He's too nice.

The worst part of everything is the complete lack of respect the organization has for their employees. The carousel of coaches and GMs is one thing. The fact that the franchise always attempts to shame and embarass these people when firing them is another.

I honestly don't care about the fire Bruce Allen thing at this point. I have completely lost interest in the team and the sport.

Eagles owner blows too. They'll win their 1st superbowl the year after he sells the team.

Was flipping around on TV this weekend and that Eagles movie with Mark Wahlberg was on (Invincible, about Vince Papale). Anyway, at the end of the movie they're doing the text captions to let you know what happened to the characters, and they talk about Dick Vermeil leading the Eagles to Super Bowl XV. I turn to my fiance (huge Eagles fan, her dad's whole family is from Philly/Jersey and she grew up there) and say "hey, did they win that game?" That shit never gets old.

Jimmy Garoppolo to the Browns? That's interesting. Would be neat if it happened, because there'd be no more guessing games at QB in Cleveland like there always is with drafting a QB and seeing if he's good enough to start right away.

Jimmy Bean, DE (to get under 90, post UDFA)

TRADES
Raiders Receive:Round 5 Pick, Connor Barwin
Eagles Receive: Round 4 Pick

Reasoning: Connor Barwin was a veteran edge rusher that can contribute to our pass rush for potentially another year or two. In 3-4 looks he also has experience, and likely is a superior fit. Worst case scenario I just made a move similar to that of the Raiders signing Lamarr Woodley, but I believe Connor Barwin is likely not a bust. With Barwin, Aldon, Mack and Irvin we will have quiet a bit of rushing talent and another veteran to mentor James Cowser and Shilique Calhoun.
________

Raiders Receive: DJ Fluker, RT
Chargers Receive: Jihad Ward, DL

Reasoning: Jihad Ward was a selection I didn't agree with at the time, and new general manager is bringing in "his guys". This also replaces Austin Howard, one of our offseason needs. I think Jihad Ward still has upside, but I am addressing needs here.
________

Raiders Receive: Curtis Grant, MLB
Giants Receive: Ben Heeney, MLB

Reasoning: Ben Heeney I think has had his Oakland Raiders shot, so I flipped him to the Giants where he can compete for another fringe roster player Curtis Grant at the same position. Grant was a 5 star HS recruit that didn't really pan out at the Ohio State. His upside comes to Oakland with the ability to compete for a roster spot or potentially, if rules permit, become a developmental player on the practice squad.

________
Raiders Receive:
Brian Cushing - ILB
Kurtis Drummond - S
Round: 4th Pick: 24 Overall: 129

Texans Receive:
Dan Williams - 43DT
Austin Howard - RT
Round: 5th Pick: 10 Overall: 155
Round: 5th Pick: 24 Overall: 169

Reasoning: Brian Cushing addresses the need for a veteran leader in the middle of the defense. He is capable of all the mental and leadership abilities we are in need of in the center of our defense and has success playing with fellow trade acquisition Connor Barwin. Like the Barwin trade I view this as a stop gap in an effort to have enough talent for a SB push in a two year window before reloading. Kurtis Drummond was a mid-late round safety prospect I liked out a couple draft classes back that ended up undrafted but has remained in the league. I view him as depth at safety with developmental upside of starter potential.

_______

Raiders Receive:

Ifo Ekpre-Olomu - CB
Pick 243

Dolphins Receive :
Pick 208

Reason: Ifo as a prospect before his injury was a top nickel corner, now coming off his second ACL (and irl release) I figured I would place a bet on his rebound and move down a bit in the late rounds to control his contract should he return successfully. When we theoretically trim to 53 players, Ifo will almost assuredly take an IR spot, which is an acquisition with minimal cost.

________
Raiders Receive:

5th Round Draft Selection

Steelers Receive :
Sean Smith, CB

Reason: Making cap room and getting a draft pick. CB will be one of the more likely BPA positions when we enter the clock in the first round and it's a deep class. Sean Smith is a fair starter, slightly overpaid, slightly old but a good couple year plan. If I had been smarter and noticed Tre Mason waiver claim would cost me roughly 4mil I'd have never done that and would likely have kept Sean Smith. For that reason I think the Steelers get the edge in this trade.

________
Raiders Receive:

13th Overall Draft Selection

Cardinals Receive :
2017 Round 1 (Pick 24)
2017 Round 3
2018 Round 3

Reason:Traded up to select our top rated CB on our board to address the most glaring need of our team.
